October Artist of the Month: Velma Ludaway.

Come see the work of this month's Artist of the month: Velma Ludaway.

Velma Ludaway’s work has explored life’s essence through abstraction of the human form with use of bold colors and geometric shapes. She continue to enhanced her work by using the African Adinkra symbols to tell another story in her “Line , Praise Houses And Out Of The Wilderness Experience” series . Her concentration on abstracted bodies and bold colors derives from her large family background, falling in the middle of fifteen brothers and sister hailing from Columbus, Ohio.

She experienced a shift in her artistic perspective when she was impacted by the downsizing of her former employer, MARTA, in 1988. While traveling to a typing class in downtown Atlanta, she noticed homeless people below a viaduct, moving in and out of small shacks. She contrasted these lines of the Atlanta homeless with experiencing the impact of unemployment on her life thus initiated her highly profitable “Lines Series” an exploration of hopefulness through steadfast standing and waiting. These and other works were exhibited in numerous National Black Arts Festival, other arts collections and exhibits throughout the city of Atlanta and the United States.

I must say, I was slightly surprised to hear the voice that came through my speakers this morning when I went to Brenda's website. This young woman is a true artist, sticking truly to what she believes is good music. Formerly signed to a distribution deal with Universal Australia, she released a single in 2001 with her former London based label MAPP records. The single hit #2 at the young age of 15. In 2003, she ditched the poppy dance tunes to sing what she felt in her heart and soul, the real stories of her life, the best songs unwritten. Brenda Nicole Moorer says "music has to be done with purpose to matter at all.” She works to create music that listeners can identify with, and not only to make them dance, but to move their hearts and change their minds.

She is a self-taught guitar and piano player, and an extraordinary writer. More than a vocalist, Brenda deems herself a songwriter first. She got her writing chops first by co-writing her music with Keisha Miles, hit songwriter for Ciara. Brenda attended Dekalb School of the Arts, a performing arts high school where she explored art in a way that began to have real meaning. She focused on writing and composing and her first song ever written, Ordinary Guy, was a huge success among the locals of Atlanta, GA in places like Apache Café and café 290. She went on to release Songbird the EP in 2006; which has now evolved to the full album, Songbird being released in October of 2011. The EP sold hundreds of copies and created quite a buzz for the budding indie star. Brenda says, “I really don’t like having to fit into a genre, so I write from whatever it is I’m feeling or thinking at the moment; whether it comes out sounding soul or pop is inconsequential.” She attempts to write from truth, telling stories and it brings a real folk element to her writing.

Muscular Dystrophy Association’s (MDA) Executive Lock-Up.

Don’t even bother asking the crime committed – it’s not really important. We just have to raise her bail before June 23rd and they’ll go easy on her, but we need your financial assistance to post her bond.

Just in, this event is supporting the MDA Summer Camp Program. They are gearing up for their trip to Camp Twin Lakes next month with about 100 campers. These kids have described this trip as the best week of their life and without supports like you, this program wouldn't be possible.

I was on the grind today by going to visit coffee shop owner Cassandra Ingram . She has owned her hip and swanky coffee shop Urban Grind for 4 years now. She lived in Manhattan, Ny for many years and wanted to come to Atlanta and bring a different flavor to coffee shops. She wanted her coffee shop to remind her of all the diversity she saw back home in the big apple.

We sat down and chatted and I loved her spirit. She told me the many challenges she faced when trying to open her own business, and maintaining it. She has lots of repeat customers, that love to just hang out and drink coffee, relax and meet up with friends. Later on you can come back and heat open mic, live music, poetry or see artwork exhibits, you just never know.

She offered me the Pesto chicken sandwich and a slice of red velvet cake, yum! She said the sandwiches are great sellers and ofcourse the different brands of coffee. Im not a coffee drinker but I would just come to hang out! I really felt comfy and at home in her place.

After we chatted, I took her outside to show her my 2010 Cadillac SRX! She loved it and said, “Wow, Cadillac has really stepped it up”. She loved all the room and the fancy tv’s in the back seats.

Rich coffee, eclectic local art, soulful music, and living room-like comfort await you at Urban Grind. For the past three years I've called Urban Grind my home away from home and my office.

It's the perfect place to come for students, designers, business men and women, etc. to set up shop, settle in, and get work done without too much disturbance. On Thursday nights rub shoulders with other artists and creative types while enjoying the vibe of passionate spoken word talents. Other nights offer live local music and screenings of independent movies.

In terms of drink I prefer their Ice chai tea which is the best I've had in town. Other drinks I like are the White Mocha, cappuccino, and the house blend of coffee. Someone please inform Kelly H. (previous reviewer) that the mango smoothie is a far better choice than the strawberry. And yes, Jake's Ice Cream is the bomb and I prefer the brown sugar, tropical sorbet, and animal cracker flavors. Enjoy ATL!

My first experience at this city coffee shop was for a local television taping and a small musical show case. Urban Grind puts you in the mind of those 6 "friends" in New York that frequently gathered at Central Perk. Atlanta based singer/songwriter The Only Michael James’s favorite motto is, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” and with him, that’s definitely the case. What you see is definitely not what you get.

This multi-instrumentalist has been playing the guitar, keyboard, and bass since his early teens. He approaches his music with an acoustic aesthetic mixed with heavily synthesized sounds. He is notorious for his live reinterpretations of his own music.He self-released his first solo EP The Digital in fall ‘08 and is currently putting the finishing touches on his first full length CD Hopeless Romantic.

ABOUT THE MOVIE:

Determined to find the law that requires American citizens to pay income tax, producer Aaron Russo ("The Rose," "Trading Places") set out on a journey to find the evidence. This film which is neither left, nor right-wing is a startling examination of government. It exposes the systematic erosion of civil liberties in America since 1913 when the Federal Reserve system was fraudulently created. Through interviews with U.S. Congressmen, a former IRS Commissioner, former IRS and FBI agents and tax attorneys and authors, Russo connects the dots between money creation, federal income tax, and the national identity card which becomes law in May 2008. This ID card will use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chips which are essentially homing devices used to track people. This film shows in great detail and undeniable facts that America is moving headlong into a fascist police state. Wake up!

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- In a small independently-owned coffee shop on the corner of one of Atlanta's urban pockets, a group of would-be poets come together at open mic night for an evening of poetry and rhymes.

Emmy-nominated spoken word poet Jon Goode appears in CNN's "Black in America" series.
It's one of the monthly gatherings at Urban Grind coffee house that has lured talent as spoken word emerges from the underground.

Artists such as Tommy Bottoms, Goldie, Chas, Nukola, and TheresaThaSongbird take turns at the microphone testing their poetic skills. These new bohemians of varying talent coin rhymes about subjects ranging from AIDS and prostitution, to high gas prices and the pangs of unrequited love.

But it was the MC who got the most props that night.

Jon Goode rounded out the evening to much laughter and applause with a lyrical diatribe about his mom and the nostalgia of his youth:

"Kids will be kids but moms will be moms, you can did what you did and mom's gonna show you right from wrong.

'But Billy mom let him stay out for an extra few.'

'I don't give a damn what Billy momma do, I will beat you, I will beat Billy, I will beat Billy momma too!'

That's how my mom used to do."

Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Goode studied economics and finance at James Madison University in Virginia. His Southern-laced vernacular alludes to a rural upbringing. His bookish style -- starched short-sleeve button up with tie, wire-rimmed glasses and a straw boater hat -- is straight out of a Harper Lee novel. Watch Jon Goode perform live »

Black in America
CNN's Soledad O'Brien examines the successes, struggles and complex issues faced by black men in America -- 40 years after the death of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Watch tonight, 9 p.m. ET

Friends liken him to "a civil rights leader that listens to rap music." Goode's spoken word performances are drawn from a collection of personal stories, most of which are true, he says.

The seasoned wordsmith rose through the ranks to deliver his rhymes to the spoken word mainstream. He's done writing stints and made appearances for Nike, Nickelodeon and CNN's "Black in America."

But it was after an appearance on HBO's "Def Jam Poetry" that Goode really started to get noticed. Goode says the trek to renown was not easy. For several years, he sent the same demo tape to HBO, hoping to get picked up on Def Poetry Jam. They told him he needed to be more animated, theatrical.

It was not until he filled in on a radio show that he was noticed by an HBO executive, who asked Goode for another tape. Goode passed along the same one he had been sending them for the past four years.
"He [the HBO executive] took it home and said, 'that was dope,' " recalls Goode.

One writing gig led to another, and eventually Goode was able to quit his corporate job and make a living from poetry. In 2006 he received an Emmy nomination for a skit written for the Nick@Nite Black History month campaign.

Borne of the smoke-infused speakeasies of 1950s and 60s underground San Francisco, California, the art of spoken word was popularized by beatnik novelists such as Jack Kerouac.

In recent years, spoken word has evolved into a by-product of rap music adopted by the urban community. Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons popularized spoken word with his Def Poetry Jam series on HBO, drawing special performances from big-name celebrities such as Dave Chappelle, Alicia Keyes and Kanye West.

Educator and hip-hop linguist Michael Eric Dyson, who also performed on Def Poetry Jam, says spoken word has given an intellectual voice to urban culture and poetry a new accessibility to an American audience.

"The revival of oral magic in black culture over the 25 years with the popularity of hip-hop has sparked the renaissance of spoken word and given it a new platform in black America," says Dyson.

"Usually it's more political and culturally conscientious than the hip-hop that is currently invoked," says Dyson.

Goode agrees that spoken word is hip-hop in its most stripped-down form and a pill that's easier to swallow when it comes to appreciating poetry.

"I like spoken word because it only requires you and your voice."

"Hip-hop artists need all these beats and all this production," says Goode.

But Goode is quick to remind aspiring poets that success does not happen overnight. He encourages writers to "have a plan" before they quit their day job.

It's a message he passes along to the young people he meets when he's on tour performing at black colleges or mentoring elementary school children.

"I try to speak to young people ... and try to get them to move forward," says Goode.
"They never knew they could be a writer, they thought they have to be a rapper or sell dope," says Goode.

"I try to tell the kids that you can get to where you wanna be, just by being you. It may take you a little longer, if you believe in yourself and what you do, just stick to your guns, and you'll get to where you are going."

Four vignettes give distinct and poignant perspectives as revolutionary sentiment foments among students in Havana and climaxes with the violent transitions from the U. S. supported Batista government to the pro-revolutionary forces led by Fidel Castro.
